映像データの圧縮方式の一つで、MPEG規格の一部。再生時に動画と音声合わせて4〜15Mbps程度のデータ転送速度が必要。画質はS-VHSのビデオ並み。DVD-VideoやATSCなどの次世代デジタルテレビなどで利用されている。MPEG-3方式はMPEG-2に吸収されたため存在しない。

このコーデックをインストールすれば、WindowsMediaPlayer等でMPEG2再生ができるようになります。例えば、HDDレコーダで録画した動画ファイルを、DVD再生ソフトを持たないPCにコピーして再生するような用途に使えます。
